Curly Flare Text
Flare Text IntroductionLearn to create a curly flare with some nice filter effects. This is a great example for learning new techniques

Step 1: Create a new document, the bigger the better. I use 800x800px document. Fill the background with black by pressing D , X and Ctrl-Backspace. Choose the Horizontal Type Tool(T) with white text-color and type anything you want.

Step 2: Select Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates. Click OK to rasterize text into a real layer. Now the Polar Coordinates dialog box will appear. Select "Rectangular to Polar" and click OK

Curly Flare 2

Step 3: Select Image > Rotate Canvas > 90o CW

Curly Flare 3

Step 4: Now right click on the "Flare layer" and select "Duplicate Layer"

Curly Flare 4

Step 5: Select Filter > Stylize > Wind and click on the "From the Left" option, click OK

Curly Flare 5

Step 6: Press Ctrl-F three times to make "Wind Effect" stronger, here is our image after this step:

Curly Flare 6

Step 7: Now select Image > Rotate Canvas > 90o CCW to rotate our image to normal position

Curly Flare 7

Step 8: Next, select Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates, but this time we select "Polar to Rectangular" option

Curly Flare 8

Step 9: Select the other layer ( the layer with no effect) and repeat step 8 with it. Now we have

Curly Flare 9

Step 10: At this time, we need to group our layer-with-effect and the background together by selecting the layer-with-effect, hold down Ctrl and click on the background

 Curly Flare 10
Merge these two layers by selecting Layer > Merge Layers (or simply press Ctrl + E)

Curly Flare 11

Step 11: We will add color to the Background by pressing Ctrl-U, the "Hue/Saturation" dialog box will appear, click on "Colorize" check box and choose appropriate values

Here is the result!

nice

Besides the fact that the text is very hard to read, the end effect isn't all that impressive, and it seems like it would have little, if any application. So, in my opinion, this is not a very good effect. Well written tutorial though.

Nice, but change your layout. One of your steps says

2. Select Filter....

i was searching through select for a few solid minutes. Rephrase it as "Go to Filter>... etc

What I learned was the procedure on how you did it. This gives me inspiration on other projects. Great job.

In this situation, be sure you use the Hue/Saturation on the BACKGROUND layer, otherwise it will not show up! Good luck

What was the font used? I like the effect, but I'm working on building up my arsenal of fonts.
