Smoke Text
Smoke Text 40x40 Learn how to create a very impressive text effect with smoky style!

Step 1: Create a new 800x800 pixels document (in fact, it is up to you!Wink). Use the Horizontal Type Tool(T) to type something with any color you like

Smoke Text 1

Step 2: Now move your mouse over the text layer and Ctrl + left click to select the text

Smoke Text 2

Step 3: Press D to reset your foreground and background color. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds and Filter > Render > Difference Clouds to put some clouds inside our text

Smoke Text 3

Step 4: Press Ctrl-D to deselect the text. Go to Filter > Brush Strokes > Accented Edges and use the default settings (Edge Width 2, Edge Brightness 38, Smoothness 5). Press Ctrl-F to repeat this effect.

Step 5: As you can see, the text's edge is very rough, so we will cut it out. Select our text by Ctrl-left click on the text layer (like we did in step 2). Go to Select > Modify > Contract and contract about 4 pixels. Go to  Select > Inverse to inverse the selection and press Delete. Press Ctrl-D to deselect. Here is our text after this step:

Step 6: Double click on the text layer to open the Layer Style dialog box. We just need to use Bevel and Emboss effect for this text.

 Smoke Text 6

Step 7: Now press Ctrl-E to merge down the text layer and the Background. Press Ctrl-U to bring up the Hue/Saturation dialog box. Make sure you tick on the Colorize check box and use these settings:

Finished! Here is our final result:

@Valentin: to set clouds within your text, you must first select it by pressing Ctrl and left click on your text layer, then go to Filter > Render > Clouds.

hey admin..

I still don't have the clouds option.
It just seems to be 'disabled' by default or something of that sort :S

I did the Ctrl + left click step yet I am not able to select the cloud option :( any help guys ?
admin 01-07-2008
@Valentin, @Hamza: if you still can't select the clouds option, try this: after pressing Ctrl+left click, create a new layer (by pressing "Create a new layer" button on the bottom of the Layers tab) and go to Filter > Render > Clouds.

Maybe simple but it was helpful to me

@Tahir: send me a picture of your screen when you choose Cloud filter. Please upload your image to an image hosting website (like photobucket.com, imagevenue.com ...)

@Fletch: comments will not ruin it! They are what people think so we value them. :)

And sorry for the extremely late response :)

Tested again but nothing unusual. Here is the screenshot:
http://img12.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=58574_clouds_122_784lo.jpg

Please try it on another computer, with only 8 bit image (your screenshot shows a RGB/16 bit and some effects will not work with it)

I cant access the layer style, so I couldnt do your magma text either. I first clicked the layer box and nothing happened, so I went the long route and went to layer, then layer style, yet everything was grayed out except Hide Layer Effects. I want mine to look 'impressive'
admin 05-11-2008
uhm, please show me an image of your screen at that time
manda 05-19-2008
for people who can't get the cloud effect to work, make sure you are ctrl + left clicking on the text icon on the layer, not just the layer itself
cr4nk 05-21-2008
